UKCGE statement on Referendum outcome

In the light of the outcome of the UK EU Referendum, UKCGE would like to reassure all its members that the Executive will do everything we can to retain full collaboration with academics, administrators, students and higher education institutions in EU member states. Universities UK on behalf of everyone in UK higher education, is already commencing discussions with the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills and other government officials to see what can be salvaged from what is a very divisive referendum vote and to work out how our tremendously significant and valuable links with Europe can be maintained and continued. As many of you will know, UKCGE’s next year’s Annual Conference is being held in Portugal, an EU member country. This will be a major opportunity for UKCGE to restate its commitment to continued collaboration on developing and nurturing postgraduate education across Europe. Last week in Copenhagen I gave a plenary address Doctoral education – a mirror for the future of higher education?’ at a conference on University Futures run by the Marie Curie UNIKE (Universities in the Knowledge Economy) Initial Training Network. I would like to think that the global emphasis and spirit conveyed in that presentation can be continued far into the future and am strongly committed to ensuring that this happens.
