Professor Luke Windsor, Trustee, UKCGE

Dean of the Leeds Doctoral College, University of Leeds

On her election as Chair of UKCGE, Dr Smith McGloin said:

What motivated me to stand for election is the Council’s great work, which I’ve been lucky to contribute to over a sustained period, and the significant work we have to do. I see a real opportunity for UKCGE to make a meaningful contribution to sector change on equity, diversity and inclusion, PGR and supervisor well-being, the role of doctoral education in research culture, doctoral funding, place-based research, civic engagement, international student experience and quality doctoral supervision.

I see potential to grow collaborations with like-minded organisations in UK/internationally and to build advocacy routes into government. I hear the urgent need to build knowledge/capacity in postgraduate taught.”

Vice-Chair, Professor Ramkalawan, added:

At a time of significant challenge for the HE sector, the collective voice has never been more important. During my own 25-year involvement in postgraduate education, the UKCGE has been critical in questioning, sharing and enhancing our knowledge and representation of PG education and research, in turn enabling us to support our incredible postgraduate communities.

I’ve benefited enormously from the focus that the Council has maintained in this area through the expertise of its trustees, members, and contributors. I’m so excited to be a part of this valued collaboration and a developing and essential portfolio of activity.”

The meeting concluded with expressions of thanks to the trustees whose terms have ended this year: Professor Doug Cleaver; Professor Janet de Wilde; Professor Julie Sheldon; Professor Hala Mansour and Rachel Van Krimpen.
