Doctoral Deans and Directors’ Network Co-Chair Nominations

  • UKCGE News

The UK Council for Graduate Education is seeking a Co-Chair for the Doctoral Deans and Directors’ (DDD) Network. The successful applicant will have a wide-ranging knowledge of postgraduate education, particularly the challenges facing heads of doctoral schools and colleges. The call for nominations closes at midday on Friday June 7th 2024.

The UK Council for Graduate Education’s Professional Networks are central to our claim to be the voice of the postgraduate community’ and help us to deliver our ethos of being a charity, driven by the sector for the benefit of the sector.

We currently run three Professional Networks: for Postgraduate Education Practitioners (PEP); for Research Supervisors (RS) and for Doctoral Deans and Directors (DDD).

The role of our networks is to develop a community of practice in which solutions and effective practices can be shared across institutions. There are opportunities to engage with the Board of Trustees, but Network Co-Chairs have the freedom to develop ideas autonomously, alongside UKCGE’s core team.

Co-chairs of the DDD Network will be appointed by UKCGE Trustees on the basis of their skills and experience in the management of doctoral schools or colleges, but also on the basis of other considerations such as institutional affiliation to ensure that the UKCGE represents the widest possible range of people and institutions across the postgraduate sector.

What Being A Co-Chair Of the Doctoral Deans and Directors’ Network Involves

The DDD Network meets face-to-face at least twice a year – once for a standalone workshop, and once at a Symposium during the UKCGE Annual Conference. This requires the Co-Chairs of the Network to be willing to design, plan and facilitate these meetings, which may also take place at the Co-Chair’s own institution.

Additionally, the DDD Network meets for three one-hour online discussions per year, which are led by Network Co-Chairs. The Co-Chair of the DDD Network can therefore expect to spend at least six days per year in planning and hosting Network meetings.

We are also keen to strengthen communications between meetings and would welcome your ideas about how the Network can achieve this.

Dr Nigel Eady
