UK Research Supervision Survey 2024 Report
The UK Research Supervision Survey is the UKCGE’s national survey offering those involved in research supervision an opportunity to share their experiences of supervising doctoral candidates.
Context
In 2021, with support from the Wellcome Trust and UKRI, UKCGE ran the first UK Research Supervision Survey (UKRSS), a UK-wide survey that was open to all those involved in supervising doctoral candidates, providing them with an opportunity to share their experiences.
With funding from Research England, through the Next Generation Research SuperVision Project (RSVP), this survey was repeated in 2024, using an online survey that was live between June 3rd and July 16th 2024 and which obtained 5,174 usable responses.
With over 5.1k responses the 2024 UK Research Supervision Survey provides an unprecedented insight into the experiences of doctoral supervisors. This empirical data from this second national survey re-confirms that time, effort, reward and recognition for supervision practice are still live issues and that team supervision is on the increase. The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge being collected as part of the Research England-funded Next Generation Research SuperVision Project.Dr Karen Clegg, Co-Director/Principal Investigator RSVP and Reader in Doctoral Education and Practice, School for Arts and Creative Technologies (ACT), University of York.
The UK Research Supervision Survey 2024 provides fresh insights into the doctoral education landscape. By exploring key aspects of supervisory practice and experience, it has enabled us to identify potential considerations for funders, institutions, doctoral schools, and, importantly, supervisors themselves. Thus, this survey is an evidence base which all can utilise to effect positive change.Professor Doug Cleaver, Co-Director/Principal Investigator RSVP, Chair of UKCGE and Director of the Doctoral College, Sheffield Hallam University.
