‘Postgraduates’ struggle with workload raises ‘concern’ for HEA’ writes Chris Havergal
According to the report from the 2015 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey, more than one quarter of full-time postgraduates studying master’s and nearly half of those working towards certificates or diplomas do not believe that their workload is manageable.

The survey was completed by 72,200 UK postgraduates and presents similar satisfaction levels to the 2014 survey; 83% of all taught postgraduate students said that they were satisfied with their course in 2014 and 2015.
In the article, Professor Rosemary Deem, UKCGE Chair noted the satisfaction and workload results indicated a need to consider whether courses are adequately funded and study sufficiently flexible.
Professor Deem, Vice Principal at Royal Holloway, University of London said,
“People are worried about PhDs because they affect the research base, and people are worried about undergraduates because that’s where the funding is, and master’s courses are maybe stuck in the middle,”
“I think there is a real danger that master’s degrees are getting squeezed between undergraduate and research students and people haven’t been looking at them in the same way.”
The Council will cover some of the information presented in the report at a seminar focused on the PGT Student Experience on the 8th June at its offices in Lichfield. The seminar is part of a series of seminars which also includes meetings exploring at PGT funding and PGT skills & employability.
Also referenced in the article is the report from the 2015 Postgraduate Research Experience Survey (previously published in November 2015) which incorporated responses from 53,348 research students, who gave an overall satisfaction score of 82 percent (the same result as 2013).
