Professor Rosemary Deem OBE elected as next UKCGE Chair
Professor Deem, Vice Principal (Education), Dean of the Doctoral School and Professor of Higher Education Management at Royal Holloway, University of London said:
“I am delighted to be taking on this role and look forward to working with the Executive and the HE sector as a whole, both in the UK and increasingly also in the context of the European Higher Education Area and beyond, as we face the challenges of facilitating greater access to and promoting the furtherance of postgraduate education, whether as administrators, academics or students, whilst working in collaboration with HE funding bodies, Research Councils, governments, policy makers and employers. Postgraduate study is truly becoming the new frontier of widening participation in higher education, which makes it both an exciting but also demanding arena in which to work.”
Rosemary is also a member of the Management Group of the South-East Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Centre. Until 2009 she was Professor of Education at the University of Bristol and has also worked at the Universities of Lancaster, the Open and York Universities and the former North Staffordshire Polytechnic. She was Graduate Dean for Social Sciences & Law at Bristol University (2004–6) & Founding Director of Lancaster University’s Graduate School (1998–2000).
Professor Deem’s term of office as Chair will begin on the 1st of August 2015 and last for 3 years up until the 31st of July 2018. Professor Mick Fuller, the outgoing Chair of UKCGE who comes to the end of a 9 year term of office with the Council in July 2015 said:
“it has been a privilege and a pleasure to serve on the UKCGE Executive for the past 8 years and as an Officer for the last 5 years and the Council is well placed to make a significant impact in the postgraduate landscape over the next few years. I know that Rosemary will make an excellent Chair and shares the values of UKCGE, its members and the wider postgraduate community. I have no doubt that her skills and experience will help the Council to build on its current achievements and to further its influence and impact in the future. Rosemary will lead a dynamic team of Officers and Executive members supported by a dedicated, capable and enthusiastic staff team and I wish her well in this leadership role. “
Professor Deem was elected through a ballot of UKCGE Executive Committee members.
Dr Tina Barnes, University of Warwick was also re-elected to serve a 2nd term of Office as Honorary Secretary of the Council.
