Professor Doug Cleaver Elected Next Chair of UKCGE
The UKCGE is delighted to announce that Professor Doug Cleaver of Sheffield Hallam University has been elected as the UKCGE Chair. Professor Cleaver was elected by his fellow members of the UKCGE’s Executive Committee to succeed Professor Douglas Halliday in the role.
Professor Cleaver is the Director of the Doctoral School and Professor of Materials Modelling at Sheffield Hallam University, with over 25 years of experience in academia.
Doug has served for four years on the Executive Committee of the UKCGE and is currently also on the Steering Committee of the Institute of Physics (IoP) Food Physics Group. He has previously performed similar roles with CCP5, the British Liquid Crystal Society, the RSC Stat Mech and Thermodynamics Group, and the IoP Liquids and Complex Fluids Group and is a panel member of the Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund.
The same election saw Professor Janet de Wilde of Queen Mary, University of London elected to the role of UKCGE Vice-Chair, replacing Dr Gill Houston, and Professor Duncan Ross of the University of Glasgow elected to be Honorary Treasurer, replacing Professor Tom Stoneham.
Following the election, Dr Owen Gower said:
“We warmly welcome the election of Professor Cleaver, Professor de Wilde, and Professor Ross to their officer roles on the UKCGE Executive Committee. Each is a committed, respected and experienced member of the postgraduate community and we look forward to working with them over the next three years.
I would also like to thank Professor Halliday, Dr Houston, and Professor Stoneham for their contributions to and guidance of the Council — especially during a very challenging past 12 months.”
Professor Cleaver, Professor de Wilde, and Professor Ross will begin their three-year terms following the Annual Conference in July 2021, joining fellow Executive Officer, Professor Julie Sheldon, the Honorary Secretary.
