Research Supervisors’ Network Co-Chair Nominations
The UK Council for Graduate Education is seeking two Co-Chairs for the Research Supervisors’ (RS) Network. The successful applicants will have wide-ranging knowledge of postgraduate education, particularly the challenges facing doctoral supervisors. The call for nominations closes at midday on May 17th 2024.

We recently held an online event which sought to compare experiences across the sector on right-to-work (RTW) checks and other administrative challenges related to the employment of external examiners to conduct PhD vivas.

UKRI Statement of Expectations for Doctoral Training – Implications for Practice
On April 12th 2024, we held an online event about UKRI’s Statement of Expectations for Doctoral Training. The session was collectively hosted by Dr Karen Clegg (University of York), Rachel Van Krimpen (University of Nottingham) and Dr Heather Sears (Coventry University).

Doctoral Outcomes: Evolution, Evaluation and Experiences
We held our 6th International Conference on Developments in Doctoral Education and Training in Bath on March 21st and 22nd 2024, bringing together people from the UK and beyond to discuss different forms of doctoral assessment, doctoral supervision and more.

UKCGE Annual General Meeting 2024
Our AGM was held online on March 15th 2024. During the meeting, a report was given on the activities of the year and attendees were informed of the outcome of the recent elections for three places on the UKCGE Board of Trustees.

Launch of the Next Generation Research SuperVision Project (RSVP)
On February 27th 2024, we had great pleasure in hosting an online launch event for the Next Generation Research SuperVision Project (RSVP). Over 200 people attended to hear presentations from the different stakeholders and to ask questions about this Research England-funded project.

Executive Committee Election 2024 — Candidates
UKCGE is pleased to confirm the list of candidates standing for election to the Council’s Executive Committee in 2024. A total of 18 candidates will stand for election, with three places available on the committee.

Supporting the Growth of the Professional Doctorate
On January 31st 2024, we held a town hall discussion which was chaired by Professor Tina Ramkalawan (Director of the Graduate School at Brunel University London) and included a presentation from Carolyn Wynne (Director of the Doctoral College at Coventry University) and Jenny Eldridge (Head of Doctoral Training at University Alliance).

Managing Expectations in the Transition to Postgraduate Research
On January 30th 2024, we welcomed Dr Clive Palmer (University of Central Lancashire) and Dr Chris Hughes (Edge Hill University) who led an online discussion around establishing good supervisory relationships in the early stages of the transition from taught to research-led education.
