Due to the retirement of Professor Stan Taylor, who was the inaugural Chair of the Research Supervisors’ Network, two Co-Chairs have been appointed to take over the running of this forum.

Following a high number of applications, we are delighted to announce that Dr Nicola Palmer and Professor Craig Martin have been chosen to continue the excellent work of Professor Taylor.

Dr Palmer is an academic at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) and the University of York, where she teaches candidates on the new UCL Global Business School for Health DBA programme. To date, she has led supervisor development for over 600 supervisors at SHU and at overseas partner institutions. She has supervised 19 doctoral candidates to completion across all modes of doctorate and at different types of UK university, working with a diverse spectrum of candidates.

Of the appointment, she said: I’m very honoured to be appointed to co-Chair of the UKCGE Research Supervisors’ Network and look forward to working alongside Professor Craig Martin in this role. Having supervised doctoral candidates since the early 2000s and leading the design and delivery of supervisor development at Sheffield Hallam University, I know how exciting, rewarding and challenging becoming and being a doctoral supervisor can be! I’m looking forward to building on the work of the UKCGE in celebrating the valuable contributions made by doctoral supervisors. I’m eager to begin to shape a range of new activities that support the development of doctoral supervisors working in diverse institutional contexts across different types of doctoral awards.”

Joining Dr Palmer is Professor Craig Martin, Deputy Director of the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts and Humanities at the University of Edinburgh. Professor Martin has almost 25 years’ experience with postgraduate research education, including the supervision of 15 PhD completions. His doctoral supervision covers the arts, the humanities and the social sciences.

I’m absolutely delighted to take on the role of Co-Chair of the UKCGE Research Supervisors’ Network, working alongside Dr Nicola Palmer,” he said. This comes at a time of changes in doctoral provision, and I very much look forward to working with our community of supervisors across a range of disciplines, sharing best practices to help the next generation of doctoral students.”

The Research Supervisors’ Network is open to all those involved in research supervision – whatever their career stage – and its Chairs are elected by members of the postgraduate community. For more information, and to join the network, please visit the links below.
