UKCGE’s second Resources Lite guidance detailing Graduate School Structures has been published.

The Resources Lite series aims to deliver practical insights and support for practitioners across the postgraduate sector. The pamphlet features an introduction into the different types of Graduate School structures, essential components of a Graduate School and also a list of 16 compelling reasons’ why every institution should have a Graduate School Structure.

As well as the above guidance, the resource presents some of the key findings from the Council’s most recent publication, Structural Changes in Doctoral Education in the UK – A review of Graduate Schools and the development of Doctoral Colleges, introduces UKCGE special interest networks and presents some brief Graduate School (or other structure) case studies from some membership institutions.

The release of the guidance coincides with the forthcoming Deans and Directors residential workshop taking place next week in York, of which there are a limited spaces remaining.

Dr Darren Van Laar, Director of the Graduate School at the University of Portsmouth who led production of the guidance and who is also Chair of the UKCGE Deans and Directors of Graduate School (DDoGS) Network said,

I really enjoyed pulling this guidance together. I hope it is a useful resource for colleagues to demonstrate the importance of a Graduate School structure in their respective institution. I also want to thank all colleagues who contributed comments to the booklet and to the UKCGE office team for pulling it all together. Finally, I look forward to welcoming delegates to this year’s Deans and Directors workshop in York next week.”

Ben Massey, UKCGE Marketing and Liaison Officer who worked with Dr Van Laar and the UKCGE membership to develop the series said,

Members are very clear in wanting the Council to put forward simple and practical guidance in line with specific issues. We wanted to pull practice together and allow adaptation to suit institutional focus. We invite any members who want to support the development of future guidance in related areas to contact the UKCGE office.”
