Francis Ridgeon won the Institute of Physics, North East regional 3 Minute Wonder Competition.

Francis, a student in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Energy (CDT) was unanimously voted as the winner by the panel of four judges for his presentation on Measuring the critical current’. The competition aim is to present cutting-edge physics-based research in a novel, exciting, and concise way. Francis’ work outlines an approach to remove a systematic error in the method of characterising superconductor properties. Francis collaborates with the European Reference Laboratory. His work will be used to correctly characterise the materials that are to be used in the experimental fusion reaction ITER.

The next stage of the 3 Minutes Wonder Competition is for Francis to compete in the national final later this year in the world famous Faraday Lecture theatre in the Royal Institution, scene of the annual Christmas Lectures on the BBC.
